As most of you know, I have been chosen as Athlete Ambassador for the ISF to help the BackSoftball campaign, aiming to reinstate softball back in the program of the Summer Olympic Games.

In this new role I will  do my best to help the campaign.

In connection with this I am asking for your help. Please read the BackSoftball flyer in order to understand how you can help us.

Athens Cup 2008
 

The Athens cup took place on the 25th and 26th of October in Athens, Greece.
The tournament was in the age group 19 and under. The Bulgarian Junior National team took part and was very close to winning the tournament. The girls had just one loss in all the games, which cost them the title.

Cup of Bulgaria 2008
 

The 12th edition of the Cup of Bulgaria took place from the 12th till the 19th of October.
After all games were played the cup went to a brand new holder. For first time in its history the team of Angels Dupnitsa deservedly won the trophy. This the first trophy for the Angels since their setting up in 2005.

All teams who played in the National championship participated on the tournament as well as the newly formed team of Devils Dupnitsa. After few years rest the club which holds 4 Championship titles, again took part in a competitions from the BSF calendar. The young team made very good impression to both coaches and audience.

 
Finals 2008
 

Final games were held between Sep 28th – Oct 11th.
The final met the yearlong rivals of Akademiks and Athletic from Sofia. During the season the exchanged 2 wins and losses and the final series were expected to be very competitive. In fact this is what happened as the teams had to play a 3rd game.
In game 1 the team of Athletic managed to win with 7 to 6 putting a lot of effort and scoring in the last innings of the game.
In game 2 the Akademiks stroke back winning 12 to 6 missing the mercy rule opportunity leading 12 to 2 at the beginning of the 5th inning.
Game 3 started as a level race. The Akademiks took the initiative scoring 3 in the second and 1 in the 3rd. Athletic managed to even the score at the beginning of the 5th, but he Akademiks stroke back with two doubles from the rookie Mariana Dimitrova and the playing coach Gergana Handjiyska followed by a single from the american player of the Akademiks Erin Kahle. In their last 2 defenses the Akademiks did not allow any runs thanks to their pitcher Aleksandra Genova who gave only 3 hits in the game verses 12 for the Akademiks. Final score was 7 to 4 for the Akademiks and 2 to 1 in the final series.
In the fight for the 3rd place the team of Babes Blagoevgrad put a lot of effort to win over the Angels Dupnitsa with 2 to 1 in the series and scores in the games 2:!2, 9:2 and 6:2. The Babes started in an unconvincing manner losing the first game 2:12, but managed to fight back in the next 2 games and celebrate their bronze medals.

Play offs 2008
 

The Play off games of the National Championship were played from the 13th till 27th of September.
The regular season games determined the following rivals:
1. ATHETIC-BABES
2. AKADEMIKS-ANGELS
Play off 1 was won by Athletic Sofia. Babes forfeited the first game and the second one played in Blagoevgrad was won by the Athletic with 6 to 3.
Play off 2 was much more competitive and ended up won by the Akademiks with 2 to 1 games and results 6:7, 10:3 and 10:5.
The final series pairs are as follows:
For 1st place: AKADEMIKS-ATHLETIC
For 3rd place: ANGELS-BABES

 
First international tournaments on the newly built field in Dupnitsa
 

The newly built Levski field in Dupnitsa hosted 2 events from the ESF competition calendar. Both were held together from the 1st till th 6th of September.

  1. European Cup Winners’ cup Women B – the right to participate was earned by the team of Athletic Sofia - Bulgarian cup holder for 2007;
  2. European Coed Slowpitch Cup – participating Bulgarian team was Balkan Stars.

The board of the BSF wants to express its gratitude especially to Mr. Peter Arbov and BSC Devils /organizers of both competitions/ without whom these tournaments would not be possible. The President of the ESF Mr. Mike Jennings, all technical commissioners and participating teams declared the tournament organization to be perfect thanks to the volunteer work of all members of BSC Devils.

We hope that the new field, which meets all standards, will be hosting lots of future events not only from the ESF but also from the BSF calendar with the active participation of the athletes from BSC Devils.

Tuscany series 2008
 

Националните отбори жени и девойки взеха участие в Тосканските серии за 2008г. В гр. Арецо, Италия. Това бе 10-тото издание на сериите, които се провеждат всяка година в областта Тоскана. Сериите включват турнири по софтбол и бейзбол от най-малките възрастови групи деца /7-10г./ до жени и мъже до 21г. За допълнителна информация – www.tuscanyseries.it

The junior tournament under 16 took place from 3rd till 6th of August. 6 teams from Italy, UK, Germany and Bulgaria took part.

On the 13th of July the first half of the season came to an end.
5 teams took part in the Preliminary round containing 20 round robin games.

The final play-offs are scheduled to start on the 13, 14.09 after the European Cup Winners Cup which will take place in Dupnitsa from the 1st till 6th of September.

At the same time and place the European Cup Coed Slowpitch will be conducted as well.

Cup of Belgrade 2008
 

The Bulgarian National softball team won the traditional tournament for Cup of Belgrade, which took place on the 5th and 6th of July in the Serbian Capital.

4 teams took part in the tournament:
Beograd 96 – Serbia
Juniors - Serbia
Slovenia
Bulgaria

Our team finished without loss. This is our 3rd participation on this tournament. We took 3rd place on the 2 previous editions. This tournament is part of the preparation of the National teams U15 and women for their up coming participation on the Tuscany series – 3-7.08, Arezzo, Italy. Few clubs from the strongest European softball countries will be there as well as teams from USA and Australia. The purpose of this tournament is getting experience for the up coming European Championship in Belgium in 2009.

 
Fastpitch Forever Tournament, Zagreb, Croatia
 
The women’s National softball team took part in the Fastpitch Forever softball tournament, which took place in the Croatian capital Zagreb.
Our team was second after the round robin, but missed the chance to play on the final after a loss from Slovenia.
The team of Princ Zagreb won the tournament.
